Why Oxidation Begins Long Before Manufacturing

Omega-3 oils are among today’s most valuable nutritional ingredients—but they are also among the most vulnerable.

Oxidation does not begin when a finished product reaches the consumer. It begins much earlier. From the moment an oil is exposed to oxygen, heat, light, moisture, or trace metals, a gradual deterioration process can begin that affects both product quality and shelf life.

For manufacturers, oxidation can result in:

✔ Off-odors and rancid flavors
✔ Loss of EPA and DHA potency over time
✔ Reduced shelf life
✔ Customer complaints and product returns
✔ Increased manufacturing costs due to waste, rework, and reduced product performance

Many manufacturers invest significant effort in selecting high-quality oils.

In my experience, minimizing oxidation begins with a few fundamental practices:

✔ Source high-quality raw materials from reputable suppliers.
✔ Minimize exposure to oxygen, heat, and light throughout processing.
✔ Use appropriate antioxidant systems where suitable.
✔ Select packaging that provides effective protection against oxygen and moisture.
✔ Validate product stability through real-time shelf-life testing rather than relying solely on theoretical projections.

As consumer expectations continue to rise, ingredient stability has become more than a quality-control objective—it has become a competitive advantage.

Manufacturers that successfully control oxidation consistently produce products with better sensory quality, improved nutritional integrity, longer shelf life, and greater customer confidence.

Understanding where oxidation begins is the first step toward protecting product quality, extending shelf life, and delivering greater value to customers.

In our next article, we’ll explore how O2P™ Oil-to-Powder Technology helps protect sensitive oils by converting liquid oils into stable, free-flowing powders designed to support longer shelf life and improved product performance.
